Centurion (previously known as Lyttelton in 1962 and then renamed Verwoedburg in 1967. The area was formerly an independent municipality with it's own town council before forming part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in 2000.

The area is one of the fastest-growing cities in Gauteng and it is situated between Pretoria and Midrand, bordering the City of Johannesburg municipality, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Mogale City.
